We’re big fans of Google’s Chrome web browser here at Redmond Pie, and the majority of us use it as our daily driver on a variety of desktop operating systems, be that Mac OS X, Windows or even on the odd occasion, Ubuntu.
The one area where the whole Chrome experience falls down if you have an iPhone though is in the syncing department.
While Chrome will happily sync its bookmarks, open tabs and history across different devices with the minimum of fuss, there hasn’t been a way to carry that over to our iPhones, iPads or iPod touches. That has just changed, with Chrome Sync Pro for iOS being brought to our attention by the lovely people over at MacStories.
Available as a $0.99 download, Chrome Sync Pro is an ingenious way of taking all your Google Chrome bookmarks, history and even your open tabs and syncing them across to an iOS device.
The whole thing works as if by magic, with a Chrome extension working away on one side of the equation and an iOS app on the other.
Users must first install the free extension via the developer’s website and then install the Chrome Sync Pro app on their iOS device of choice. After giving the app access to your Google Docs account, everything is synced over.
See, in the interests of security, Chrome Sync Pro’s developers never actually see the content of your bookmarks, or your history, or even your open tabs. The whole thing works by saving the data to your Google Docs account and then reading it from there. It’s all rather clever, and we have to give the developer in question a big thumbs up for thinking outside the box there.
Once everything is synced across to the iOS app then users can tap the links and have them open in a variety of browsers, be that Safari or one of the many other supported apps. Some favorites such as iCab are missing, but there are plenty there to be getting on with.
For the price of just a buck, we recommend giving this a try if, like us, you’re firmly entrenched in the world of Google Chrome.
