Existing iPhone users of the Google Fi service are starting to be given the option to switch to eSIMs, according to reports. Google Fi first started offering eSIM support to new subscribers last month with 9to5Google reporting that some existing users can now switch.
Users will need to have a compatible device in order to use an eSIM, with the iPhone XR, iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone 11 Pro Max, and iPhone SE all supported.
The new eSIM support was added to the newly released Google Fi version 2.5 update with some users needing to uninstall and then reinstall it to get the new feature.
Officially, this functionality has not yet rolled out, but several users have got it working by first uninstalling the Fi app. After reinstalling and signing in, they’re prompted about switching to eSIM and freeing up the phone’s physical slot.
Freeing up a traditional SIM slot can be useful when traveling, allowing users to install a local SIM and avoiding roaming charges in the process. Having their existing eSIM up and running also offers the chance to have multiple lines connected to a single iPhone – perfect for those who need a business and personal line, for example.
The updated Google Fi app can be downloaded for free from the App Store right now, and instructions of setting up and adding an eSIM to the plan on your iPhone can be found over at the Google Fi website.
