The New iPhone SE Supports WiFi 6, Express Transit, But No Ultra Wideband Chip Inside

Apple’s 2020 iPhone SE is taking the internet by storm right now, not least because it means that we can finally put the rumor to bed. It might not be called iPhone 9, but this is very much the successor to the iPhone 8.

It gains plenty in the process though, including support for WiFi 6 and and Express Card.

The WiFi 6 support is probably one that most people won’t notice or care about. You’re only going to be interested in WiFi 6 when you come around to buying a new router. People don’t tend to do that too often, but when they do, WiFi 6 means for better connections. So there’s that to consider, maybe.

More importantly, the iPhone SE supports Express Transit, allowing it to be used at compatible transit terminals even when the battery is completely dead. That could also be something that comes in useful should Apple Car Key come to fruition.

Finally, there’s an interesting one. The iPhone SE doesn’t have an Ultra Wideband chip inside. That means there are no directional AirDrop transfers here,and it also means that Apple’s AirTags might be left in the cold, if they’re ever released.

When Apple added the U1 Ultra Wideband chip to the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro, we expected it to come to everything else released after that point. So far, that’s most definitely not happened.

It’s sure to be part of the iPhone 12 lineup later this year, though.
