Apple’s recently announced MacBook Air refresh isn’t yet shipping to customers, but early reviewer updates have now been made available online. None of those reviewers have spent longer than a day or two with the new machine, but that’s been more than long enough to get us some Geekbench results.
We’ve seen early comments from the likes of Jason Snell at Six Colors. And if there’s one thing that seems to be flowing through those comments, it’s that this new MacBook Air is fast enough, although it won’t be pushing any MacBook Pros very far.
The MacBook Air has never been Apple’s powerhouse computer, but it appears that it’s now gotten a little more punch. Based on Geekbench test results shared by Six Colors, it appears that the MacBook Air Snell was given is running at around 75% higher scores than a comparable model from 2018, although it’s difficult to compare the two models directly because of the different CPU configurations. Either way, the new machines are faster.
Depending on which configuration you go for, you’ll see smaller or larger speed improvements this time around. The standard $999 model comes with an Intel i3 processor, which is probably worth avoiding.
Upgrade to the i5 for the extra $100. It’ll be worth it in the long run.
