While we’ve heard a steady stream of rumors relating to the iPhone SE replacement arriving this year, most of the stories have been similar. It’s expected to be a replacement for the iPhone 8 with Touch ID and a similar design. But it’s expected to have a more powerful CPU inside, likely the A13.
However a new report by Macotakara appears to cite Apple supply chain companies at CES as saying that another 5.4-inch model is on the horizon.
According to Macotakara, the phone would be a refreshed iPhone 8 but with Face ID rather than Touch ID. And it is thought to have a “much bigger” camera module than the Phone 8, too.
The body size returns to iPhone 7, and the receiver size is in between the iPhone 11 series and the iPhone XS series. By employing TrueDepth camera, the vertical width of the active area size for the display expands and thus becomes 5.4-inch size, and the possibility of it being the model buzzed about increases.
We find it difficult to believe that Apple is going to announce two iPhone SE replacements, whether any of them look like an iPhone 8 or not. The phone that we’re expecting to be called iPhone 9, will most likely have a 4.7-inch display and Touch ID as per previous rumors. What is more likely here is that Macotakara is getting things mixed up, with previous claims from Ming-Chi Kuo having a new 5.4-inch iPhone with face ID coming this year. But it isn’t going to be a replacement for the iPhone 8, but rather a replacement for the iPhone 11.
Of course, all of this is still very much up in the air and at this point very few people truly know what is going on. But as we edge closer to September we’d expect more clarity. And maybe even sooner if rumors of a March iPhone 9 release are true.
