When Apple releases iOS 13 and iPadOS 13 to the public next month there is one feature that will be of particular interest to many people. Dark Mode is something that users have been asking for in recent years, and now it’s almost here. And Microsoft has also confirmed that its Office suite of apps will support Dark Mode via a collection of new software updates.
The announcement came in a blog post in which the design process for coming up with a Dark Mode for Outlook is explained. It also goes on to note that the use of Dark Mode isn’t just cosmetic but that it can also help with eye strain, too.
Our design research specifically focused on these contexts where folks would want to use Dark Mode, and the response was very positive. While some Dark Mode experiences can be neon or overly bright, people felt that Outlook mobile kept the kind of relaxed feeling you might want in a dimly lit living room or bedroom.
They described the experience as comfortable, crisp, clear, and aesthetically pleasing, a nod to how Dark Mode can reduce eye strain.
The updates apps include Outlook, Word, Excel, and Powerpoint, with updates starting to roll out today. Microsoft also says that the apps will automatically switch between light and dark interfaces based on the system settings a user makes.
Apple is expected to launch iOS 13 to the public next month, alongside a trio of 2019 iPhones.
