After many, many long years the iPod touch has been updated. Apple announced the refresh via press release today, with the device looking identical to that which came before it. That means there is no Touch ID, nor Face ID, and the same 4-inch LCD screen is used.
All of the changes come on the inside of this refreshed iPod touch. Those changes start with the inclusion of an Apple A10 Fusion chip.
There’s also now a new model with 256GB of storage on board, with the base model retaining a 32GB configuration for $199. From there, each storage upgrade – 128GB and 256GB – incurs a $100 price bump.
The inclusion of a more modern CPU means that the new 2019 iPod touch can make use of some of Apple’s recent software updates including support for ARKit and Group FaceTime.
An iPod touch update has been rumored heavily in recent months, and now that it’s here we can’t help but feel a tinge of disappointment.
The iPod touch was always likely to be a low-cost option for those who don’t want an iPhone, but given the $199 starting price this isn’t what anyone would call inexpensive. And despite a speed bump to the A10 Fusion processor, it still lags behind more recent devices using variations of the A12.
Could Apple have not stretched to an A11?
Regardless, the new iPod touch is available now in six colors; Space Gray, White, Gold, Blue, Pink, and (PRODUCT)RED. If an iPod touch is what you’ve been hankering for, and an iPad mini is too large, here it is.
