The news comes from Deadline – a blog dedicated to covering the entertainment industry – in a report which claims that Sony Pictures is making a “hefty deal” to get rights to Steve Jobs’ upcoming authorized biography. If Sony does actually get the rights, they are set to make a major feature film based on the book.

The biography Sony Pictures reportedly is aiming to get rights to is titled Steve Jobs: A Biography. It is written by Walter Isaacson – a prominent journalist who has served roles such as Chairman/CEO, CNN and Managing Director, TIME. The biography is based on over 40 interviews Isaacson conducted with Jobs over a period of two years along with well over 100 interviews with family members, friends, adversaries, competitors and colleagues.

From Deadline:

EXCLUSIVE: I’ve just learned that Sony Pictures is making a hefty deal to acquire feature rights to Steve Jobs, the upcoming authorized biography by former CNN chairman and Time Magazine managing editor Walter Isaacson. I’m hearing the deal is $1 million against $3 million and that Mark Gordon will be the biopic’s producer. But this will be an MG360 project, which is the movie production partnership between Gordon and Management 360. ICM reps both Isaacson and Gordon. Sony Pictures would not comment.

Steve Jobs: A Biography was originally slated for a release in late November, but its launch has been moved up to October 21st after seeing great interest from the general public (pre-orders increased by 53, 555%). This great interest, as most of you may know, stems from Steve Jobs’ recent death. The founder and former CEO of Apple died this Wednesday after suffering from cancer.

If Sony does manage to get rights to the book and produces a movie out of it, it would be a very interesting film to watch. The movie studio has a nice track record, having recently produced the Academy Award winning drama film The Social Network – related to the rise of Facebook – which was based on a book titled The Accidental Billionaires.
