It’s a big day for the folks at Huawei today after the company announced not one, not two, but three new smartphones during an event in London. The Mate 20, Mate 20 Pro and Mate 20 X are all now very real, and they look very good, too.
All three devices were given their debut on-stage and while we knew what to expect to a point, the arrival of the Mate 20 X may be something that takes many by surprise, if only because of its sheer size. Intrigued? You will be! But let’s start with the more conventional stuff.
Huawei Mate 20
Starting things off with the lower-end model, we have the Mate 20 that will ship with a 16MP camera as its main option with a 12MP wide-angle shooter alongside it. There’s a third 8MB telephoto lens for good measure, too.
All of this is around the back, and around the front you’ll find a smaller notch than we have become accustomed to, sitting above the 6.53-inch 1080p LCD screen. There’s an octa-core Kirin 980 CPU – an industry first 7nm chip – and 6GB of RAM inside, with storage options reaching 128GB. Finally, we have the surprisingly low IP53 water and dust resistance. You’ll also notice the lack of a fingerprint sensor, which has not been removed, but moved under the display.
Color choice comes down to Midnight Blue, Black, and Twilight, with EMUI running atop Android 9 Pie. The phone is available for pre-ordering right now with the price starting at $926.
Huawei Mate 20 Pro
Moving on to the higher-end device, everything is the same except a few notable differences. First, there’s the different camera system that includes a 40MP primary sensor, 20MP wide-angle lens, and an 8MP 3x telephoto lens to top everything off. There’s also a 3120 x 1440 pixel display at a 19.5:9 aspect ratio, measuring 6.39-inches. It’s also IP68-rated. There’s a larger notch in play here, thanks to the inclusion of a facial recognition system that the Mate 20 does not offer. This is Face ID-like in its setup, and we’ll have to see how well it performs when reviews start to roll in. There’s a 24MB camera in that notch no matter whether you opt for the Mate 20 or Mate 20 Pro.
Like the Mate 20, the Mate 20 Pro will come with an in-screen fingerprint sensor and a 4,000mAh battery that should keep things ticking along nicely. Speaking of battery, the Mate 20 Pro has a splendidly cool feature built-in; reverse wireless charging. Yes, you read that right, the Mate 20 Pro can charge any Qi compatible device wirelessly by posing as a wireless mat of sorts. Definitely, a unique feature to set it apart from the rest of the crowd.
Color choice comes down to Midnight Blue, Black, Twilight, and a patterned Emerald Green, with EMUI running atop Android 9 Pie. The phone is available for pre-ordering right now with the price starting at $1,215.
Huawei Mate 20 X
This has to be one of the largest smartphones around thanks to its 7.2-inch OLED display. There’s a 5,000mAh battery beneath that screen, and you can write on it thanks to the included M-Pen. The display is only a 1080p panel, but Huawei is pushing the phone’s gaming prowess hard and there’s a new “graphene film cooling technology,” something Huawei reckons will keep the Mate 20 X’s Kirin 980 SoC cool even during long gaming sessions. The phone will ship with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of onboard storage, along with a dual speaker configuration.
Color choice comes down to Midnight Blue, and Phantom Silver, with EMUI running atop Android 9 Pie. Pricing starts at $1,042. The Mate 20 X will be released on October 26.
