Social networking site Twitter has today rolled out a major update to its Android app, according to the Twitter blog, which finally adds push notifications as well as multi-account support.
Push notifications have been long overdue for many a disgruntled Android Twitter user. The feature was introduced to iOS as early as last November and at the time Twitter stated that it hoped to add push to Android in the near future. Updates came and went with no push notifications, much to the bemusement of many of its users. But now the wait is finally over, and Twitter’s Android users have the option of instant updates, which can be turned off or on in account settings, as the blog post explains:
Push notifications let you instantly receive Twitter updates – no matter what you’re doing on your phone. In your account settings, select “automatic refresh” and choose to receive updates for Direct Messages, @Mentions (from the people you follow or anyone), and Tweets.
In addition to push, there is now support for multiple accounts, so you can be logged in to more than one account at the time – no more logging in and out every time you need to switch between accounts. Simply press the Menu key, then Accounts, and select desired account name from the list. Great news for those who like to have one account for business purposes as well as a personal one. The blog continues:
You can also now use multiple accounts on Twitter for Android without ever logging out. It’s easy to switch between accounts to discover and share what’s happening in the world.
Such updates, which increase the functionality and help to stave off some of the tediousness associated with using such apps are always welcome. Those that use more than one Twitter account on a regular basis can now with apparent ease. And although not everybody is such a fan of the constant interruption that push notifications can bring, more features makes for a better all round application.
You can grab the new updated version from the Android Market, simply launch the Market app from your Android handset and do a quick search for Twitter, you should see the app right at the top, simply download, install and rejoice.
