Right alongside the release of iOS 5 beta 3, Apple has also seeded the third beta of iTunes 10.5 which is a major requirement if you plan on restoring your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch to iOS 5 beta 3.
iTunes 10.5 beta fully supports the features and services of iOS 5 beta 3, without which it would be completely useless. To start off with, iTunes 10.5 beta 3 is a very necessary download in order to get your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch up to speed with iOS 5 beta 3, and to say the least, iTunes 10.5 is the only way through which you can restore to the newest beta of iOS 5.
The previous release of iTunes 10.5 beta 2 and iOS 5 beta 2 enabled the most awaited Wi-Fi sync feature on all iOS devices, which enables users to sync their iPhones, iPads and iPod touches with their PC or Mac without any cables attached, and that too over Wi-Fi. The current release of iTunes 10.5 beta however doesn’t bring that much over the previous beta, except that it carries a lot of bug fixes and makes iTunes 10.5 beta a lot more stable to run on your PC or Mac.
Full change log:
- The version of iTunes that comes with beta 3 cannot sync devices that have the beta 2 software installed. To avoid this problem, do the following:
- Sync any devices that have beta 2 installed to the version of iTunes that came with beta 2.
- Upgrade iTunes to the version that comes with beta 3.
- Connect the device and install the beta 3 software. (Understand that you might see a failure to sync error when you first connect the device.)
- After installing the beta 3 software, restore from your the backup you made in step 1.
- Videos purchased from the iTunes Store do not play on a 2nd generation AppleTV over AirPlay with iTunes 10.5.
Just like iOS 5 beta, or any other iOS related beta software, you have to be enrolled in Apple’s developer program in order to download iTunes 10.5 beta 3, which requires you to sign up with an annual fee of $100, which is quite worth it, considering you’ll be one of the few lucky ones getting the chance to test drive iOS 5 beta before it goes final some time in fall.
iOS 5 and iTunes both were announced back in June at WWDC along with OS X Lion. iOS 5 is a major release in terms of functionality and services it has to offer over the current version, which is iOS 4. The major leap forward in iTunes was the announcement of iTunes in the cloud and iCloud, which are both cloud related services from Apple which keep your content in sync across different iOS devices registered under your Apple ID.
Without further due, you can download iTunes 10.3 beta 3 by heading over to Apple’s Dev Center website. Restoring your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch to iOS 5 beta is a piece of cake! Simply launch iTunes 10.5 beta 3 on your computer, connect your iOS device, once it is detected, choose your device from the left column, and in the center of the page you should see a “Restore” button, don’t click it yet. Hold down the left Shift key if you’re on Windows (“alt” key if you’re on a Mac) and press the “Restore” button, a new window will pop up, simply point it towards the iOS 5 beta 3 file tailored for your device, that’s all.
