One of Apple’s hardware suppliers, Wistron, is planning on expanding its iPhone manufacturing operations in India with the main work being done on iPhone SE 2 according to a report by Focus Taiwan.
Apple’s less expensive iPhone is due a refresh, and the report suggests that Wistron will be building the new phone in India, with Apple giving the company the majority of its orders for the device. Initial reports have the updated iPhone SE ready to ship some time in early 2018.
Wistron is well-versed in building the iPhone SE seeing as it already does exactly that. That manufacturing actually already happens in India, too, with work having begun at the Bangalore site back in May. It is anticipated that the same plant will be used for building the new device, which makes plenty of sense to anyone with even a passing knowledge of the situation. The report also claims that sales of the new iPhone SE will begin in India and then move internationally, something which we find hard to believe. However, the iPhone SE is a good fit for the Indian market, where it can be sold as a cheaper, smaller iPhone than those already offered.
Wistron is apparently in talks with the local government with a view to expanding production.
Taiwan-based contract electronics maker Wistron Corp. is preparing for expansion of its production base in India to produce the next-generation smaller iPhone — the iPhone SE — according to sources in the South Asian country. According to the sources, Wistron is expected to start to ship the new iPhone SE — which is expected to be more affordable than larger iPhones for many Indian consumers — in the first quarter of next year.
They said that Wistron is in talks with the Karnataka government for an extra piece of land for its production expansion, hoping it will double or even triple its production capacity over the next five years.
The suggestion that the iPhone SE will not receive an update until early 2018, while disappointing, does make sense given the past release cadence of the device. We will perhaps know more following the iPhone 8‘s big reveal next month – if there is no iPhone SE forthcoming then, early 2018 will be more likely than ever.
