There is a lot of buzz surrounding Apple right now, and rightly so. Having been essentially dormant when it comes to Macs for far too long, the company took the unusual step of pre-announcing new Mac hardware this week, and it has everyone very giddy indeed.
It would appear that there are still things going on inside Apple that are neither Mac nor mobile related, especially if the blog Pike’s Universum is to be believed. While Apple has already said that a new monitor is on the way, the blog has today given us some interesting information beyond the simple fact that it is being worked on.
According to the blog, Apple is set to re-enter the display market with not just a new 4K offering, but one that will be capable of an 8K resolution. Displays using panels that can display 8K images are only just beginning to reach the market and the thought of Apple jumping straight back into the display game at 8K rather than the more mainstream 4K is an intriguing one.
The blog did not give any details as to pricing or availability of the display, but Apple has already said that it will not be available this side of the new year.
Pike’s Universum barely mentioned the display, beyond its resolution, suggesting there is little anyone really knows about the semi-announced product.
Apple is also working on a 8K display for the next generation of Mac Pro’s, which by the way will be much more like a PC with the next generation EFI BIOS.
Existing 8K displays cost around $5,000 to buy, and it is a fairly safe assumption that any display of that ilk made and then sold by Apple will be at least that expensive, if not considerably more. Apple’s displays were never inexpensive prior to its decision to not offer one for sale of late, and while that is likely the reason it didn’t sell many, we don’t see much chance that anything will change in that regard when this new 8K display goes on sale sometime next year.
