Apple announced and launched its first tvOS-powered Apple TV over a year ago now, and while the set-top box has never been high on the company’s list of devices to keep updated, there has been little talk of a hardware refresh for a device, which at one point, was rumored to be the center of a new content strategy.
Now, though, we are starting to hear murmurings that suggest a new Apple TV is in the works.
According to the co-founder of a tvOS and iOS gaming company called Firi Games, a new and as yet unknown device has begun to appear in the logs generated by its games.
The device uses the unique identifier AppleTV 6,2, which would obviously suggest a new Apple TV of some sort, presumably Apple TV 5. For reference, the current fourth-generation Apple TV uses the identifier AppleTV 5,3, so the new designation does make plenty of sense if this is indeed a refreshed set-top box.
Also picked up by the logs is the fact that the new device is reportedly running tvOS 11, which is not even available in beta form for existing Apple TVs. The evidence continues to mount when the device’s IP address is taken into consideration, too. According to the report, the IP address can be traced to a location close to Apple’s Cupertino headquarters, again suggesting that a device operated by the company is to thank for its appearance in Firi Games’s logs.
With almost nothing known about what Apple is working on for a new Apple TV, or indeed if one is anywhere near being ready to be shown off, it is hard to gauge where we are on a possible new release. WWDC is edging ever closer, though, and with iOS 11 expected to debut at the opening keynote for the event, it is very likely tvOS 11 will also be shown off.
Will that be on new hardware, though? Maybe.
