Sony is currently rolling out a beta release of the upcoming 4.50 firmware update to its PlayStation 4 software, and it’s bringing some new features to the console as we told you recently. One feature that we didn’t know about at the time has now been outed by Sony, and interestingly, it’s one that is only available to those who own a PlayStation 4 Pro.
According to Sony, anyone who owns a PS4 Pro and installs the new beta release of the system’s software will notice a new option to enable Boost Mode. While that might sound like a button that lives on the front of a 1990s-era PC, what Boost Mode does is actually quite interesting.
Once enabled, anyone playing an original PS4 game on a PS4 Pro should notice an increase in frame rate and possibly even quicker loading times thanks to an increase in CPU speed. Sony told The Verge that Boost Mode “lets PS4 Pro run at a higher GPU and CPU clock speed in order to improve gameplay on some PS4 games that were released before the launch of PS4 Pro.”
Sony is keen to stress that this will not have an impact on all titles, so don’t expect every game you own to suddenly perform better, but Sony believes that this new mode will give titles released before the PS4 Pro’s arrival a level of performance that they did not have before.
It’s not all good news though, with Sony confirming that there is a potential for games to misbehave with Boost Mode enabled. Should you start to experience any issues when playing older games, Sony suggests disabling Boost Mode and trying again – something to bear in mind when things start to go awry, then!
It might also be worth keeping an eye on how warm your PS4 Pro gets when playing with Boost Mode turned on. We can’t imagine the thing being any cooler than with it off, that’s for sure!
