Apple, LG Unveil UltraFine 4K, 5K Displays For 2016 MacBook / MacBook Pro

Apple may have announced all new MacBook Pros today, but one thing it mentioned that may not have received all that much attention was that the company would be partnering with LG to produce 4K and 5K displays that are specifically designed to work perfectly with the newly-announced notebooks.

The two monitors, dubbed LG UltraFine displays, are the perfect partners for new MacBook Pro users, but they won’t be cheap.

Starting off with the 21.5-inch 4K screen, the display features a resolution of 4096 x 2304 and P3 wide color gamut. Anyone wanting to get in on this action can do exactly that, but they will need to hand over $699.95 in order to do so. The screen connects to the new MacBook Pro or existing MacBook via a single USB-C or Thunderbolt 3 cable, which is good considering the MacBook only has the one port!

The screen itself does have a further collection of ports, though, making adding accessories a little easier than at first blush.

A single USB-C cable (included) provides up to 60W of charging power to your MacBook with USB-C port or MacBook Pro with Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) ports. And three downstream USB-C ports (480 Mbps) offer additional connectivity and power to compatible devices and accessories.

Moving on to the 27-inch 5K LG UltraFine Display, buyers will get a 5K resolution of 5120 x 2880 as well as that P3 wide color gamut. They’ll pay for it, though; this monitor will cost $1,299.95. That’s a lot of money for a monitor, no matter how gorgeous it might look. Those not put off by that price will have to wait before they can have one, though, because it’s marked as “unavailable” on Apple’s website at the moment, but the company has said that it expects the display to go on sale in December. Meanwhile, the 21.5-inch 4K variant is available to order now, but with a 5-6 week lead time.

We’re sure it will be worth the wait!
