The majority of us expected a lot of Mac related announcements during today’s Apple “hello again” event, but it’s probably fair to suggest that not many of us expected Tim Cook to make some Minecraft-based announcements.
As a company that always wants to push the boundaries and blindside the onlooking public, Apple has indeed announced that the extremely popular Minecraft game is joining the existing 2000 games in the tvOS App Store with a native release for the fourth-generation Apple TV.
In all honesty, anyone who has even the smallest amount of familiarity with gaming, and specifically mobile gaming, will be well aware of the Minecraft franchise and just how popular it is. The now Microsoft-owned title is a gaming behemoth, and has proven extremely popular on PC, console, Mac, and of course, across Apple’s iPhone and iPad hardware.
With Apple looking to continuously push the boundaries of what’s possible with the Apple TV, it’s now been announced that Minecraft will make use of the big screen before the year is out.
It actually makes perfect sense to have Minecraft up there on the large screen in the living room. Unlike the September 7 event which saw Apple introduce Nintendo legend to announce Super Mario Run for iOS, Tim Cook confirmed today that Minecraft is coming to the Apple TV, and he also briefly touched on what would be possible within the app.
One of those possibilities, which is sure to appeal to gamers, is the fact that it looks to have multiplayer modes that allow Apple TV gamers to actually interact and play with friends or family who are running Minecraft via an iOS device.
You can build new worlds on your Apple TV, and play with your friends using iPhones and iPads.
It remains to be seen how Minecraft will actually work on the Apple TV, and how gamers will actually interact with the environment via the Siri Remote, but the fact that new and unique worlds can be created, and Apple TV owners can play and interact with friends on an iPhone or iPad, will definitely make this an appealing proposition. There’s been no official release date given, but Minecraft for Apple TV is likely to be a chargeable download and will arrive before the turn of the year.
