Alphabet-owned Nest has finally listened to the wants and desires of connected device enthusiasts by introducing a new version of its popular Nest Cam designed for outdoor use; the Nest Cam Outdoor.
The original Nest Cam has proven to be extremely popular with those who wanted an innovative home security solution with little set up overheads and at a relatively low-cost. However, the product couldn’t exactly cater to those who wanted to monitor the exterior of their property. Step forward the company’s new Nest Cam Outdoor, a newly designed camera that looks to appeal to those looking for an externally mounted security camera.
The camera itself will cost $199, which is the same price point as the original non-waterproof Nest Cam, and will come equipped with 1080p video and a 130-degree field of view. One of the many concerns with external cameras is just how well they perform in the evenings under low-light conditions.
The Nest Cam Outdoor has taken that into consideration and will ship with a design that encompasses 8 infrared LEDs for enhanced night vision. There’s also a built-in microphone and loudspeaker for two-way conversation with visitors who may be at the door of the property.
One of the important aspects of the Nest Cam Outdoor is that it has been purposely redesigned to look and feel more like a security camera, whereas the original Nest Cam was intended for use within the home and therefore had the design and aesthetic to look clean and elegant in that type of environment.
Like its indoor counterpart, the Nest Cam Outdoor will be extremely easy to install thanks to the inclusion of a snap-on magnetic base and flat wiring that can be easily painted to match the exterior of the property or area that it’s installed in.
In addition to launching this new product, Nest has also redesigned the existing Nest app with a new look and feel as well as a new feature called Person Alerts intended for use by Nest Aware subscribers. The Person Alerts feature will use the camera to distinguish between activity involving an actual person or another entity. As an example, the cam can provide an alert for a human being in the vicinity but not if it detects a dog or vehicle passing by. A new Spaces feature of the app intelligently groups Nest products by room, this allowing for better control and management of multiple products.
The Nest Cam Outdoor is available for pre-ordering right now for $199. It’s expected to ship sometime in the fall.
