Apple was clearly extremely proud of its newly redesigned Lock screen experience when it was being shown off during the opening keynote of WWDC. One part of that new redesign is the ‘Raise to Wake’ feature that automatically brings the iPhone display to life when the device is raised.
The feature is perfect for when the phone’s taken out of a pocket or picked up from a flat surface, for example. It’s been implemented by Apple to allow the device display to be visible and any notifications to be read without having to press any buttons or interact with Touch ID/Home button. Definitely a feature users will enjoy, but it does come with its limitations.
If the Raise to Wake feature is something that you’ve been yearning for with each major iOS release, then you’ll probably be chomping at the bit to get to grips with it. However, in true Apple fashion, the company has decided to limit the devices that will actually support this feature, at least that is what appears to be the case right now.
In its current form, the iOS 10 Raise to Wake functionality will only work on iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, and iPhone SE owners. Bummer. Of course, that support will likely be extended to the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus when they launch alongside the first public version of iOS 10 later in the year, meaning that the feature will support five devices in total.
Apple seems to have integrated the feature as a direct response to the many complaints that it has received from users around the globe who claim that the second-generation Touch ID sensor is far too sensitive and actually unlocks the device before they’ve even had a chance to see what notifications are being displayed on the Lock screen. It would appear that Apple is opting to stick to Touch ID version 2 for Raise to Wake, but the doesn’t appear to be the case as iPhone SE carries the version 1 of Touch ID sensor and yet it does support Raise to Wake while iPhone 6 and others don’t.
If Apple’s reasoning for this Raise to Wake limitation is 3D Touch, even then it doesn’t appear to be the case in iPhone SE as iPhone SE, like we all know, doesn’t have 3D Touch support. We still don’t know why Raise to Wake is limited only to iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus and iPhone SE.
The first beta of iOS 10, which is live for developers to interact with, also features new rich and interactive notifications that allows notifications to be interacted with via 3D Touch gestures. While the new rich and interactive notifications are currently limited to 3D Touch only device in beta 1, Apple has confirmed that future iOS 10 betas will enable this functionality for non-3D Touch devices as well.
We can only hope that is the case for Raise to Wake feature as well, because there is no real reason for Apple to limit it to just 6s, 6s Plus and SE range.
