Samsung Demos Flexible Display That Rolls Up Into A Cylinder [Video]

Creating a display that can be bent or rolled is still the holy grail of consumer technology, and while rumors have had Samsung ready to release a smartphone with such a display for a few years now, the nearest thing the company has gotten to such a thing is the Galaxy S6 and S7 Edge devices. Both devices feature a curved display, but neither come close to being flexible or rollable.

Now, though, a new report claims that Samsung is not only set to release a smartphone with a flexible display but also set to do it sooner rather than later. According to the report, a new Galaxy X smartphone will join the existing Galaxy S and Galaxy Note lineup as soon as next year, with a flexible display set to be its big selling point.

Samsung has already shown off a screen that could fit the bill, measuring 5.7-inch diagonally, with a Full HD resolution offering enough pixel density to make a smartphone implementation viable. The display in question, demoed at SID 2016 in San Francisco, can be rolled up into a metal cylinder with a radius of just 10mm. We don’t expect Samsung’s next big smartphone to be something that fits into a tube, but the thought of a phone that can be bent at will is something that has implications not just for the way a device can look, but also its ability to withstand stresses created by falls, for example.

Rumors that have been circling for a while now suggest Samsung is working on a device that can be folded over in the middle, not unlike a wallet, but given the constraints of the things that need to go into a smartphone – namely the battery – we just don’t see that being on the cards as soon as next year. That said, we’re prepared to be surprised!
