Sony has either upped its response levels in an attempt to appease consumers and gaming fans alike, or someone has tread on the company’s toes and is keen to get the official word out there. It has only been a matter of days since a sprightly developer demoed an unofficial application that allowed PlayStation 4 games to be streamed to a connected PC. Well, it looks like that Sony didn’t take that too well, forcing the Japanese electronics giant to respond to public apprehensions.
The unofficial PS4 Remote Play app for Windows has clearly ruffled a few feathers internally at Sony, who have come out with a much needed response regarding their plans for such a support.
Sony’s Shuhei Yoshida took to social media to confirm that his company is indeed working on an official Remote Play app for the desktop platform, and yes that includes both Windows and Mac OS X.
Some people asked if we plan to provide Remote Play function to PC, and yes, we are indeed working on an official application for PC/Mac. 😀
PlayStation 4 owners have been particularly interested in the launch of the unofficial streaming app that offers Windows PC support. The $10 unofficial app brings with it full mouse and keyboard support for those wanting to play PlayStation 4 games via a Windows PC. Of course, PS4 owners would honestly prefer an officially released app by Sony that is guaranteed support, rather than parting with an upfront payment for an unofficial app that could potentially receive a cease and desist notice from Sony’s lawyers.
The enigmatic and always fun Yoshida appears to have confirmed that Sony will indeed be providing that official experience. The great news about this particular announcement is that not only has an official representative of Sony confirmed the existence of the platform, but has also confirmed that it will be supporting both PC and Mac desktops and laptops from the offset. It will be a bit of a blow however for the developer of the unofficial application who has been working on the experience for more than twelve months and was probably planning on making a living from the $10 app.
Xbox may have had a head start in streaming games to Windows 10 PCs, but the announcement and ultimate arrival of the PS4 streaming feature to the Mac as well, could give the Microsoft-built console a run for its money.
It remains to be seen if Yoshida, or any other representative from within Sony, would have made this announcement quite so soon if the unofficial app hadn’t been announced. The announcement is also notable for the fact that it lacks any real intricate information about potential initial features, or when the app will actually be launched and made available to the public.
