Apple’s newly announced iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus bring with them a new camera that is capable of not only taking some pretty impressive still shots, but also some equally impressive 4K video. While it is obviously very much true that the new iPhones aren’t the first smartphones in the world to offer 4K recording, they are the first with an Apple logo on, and as such, this will be the first time many people have had the capability. So how is it?
Well, first there’s some good news. If you check out the embedded 20-second video below, then that right there is 4K video shot on an iPhone 6s.
Admittedly, it’s a nice, bright scene and one that lends itself to looking rather lush anyway, but there’s little doubting the quality of the video itself. You’ll need a 4K screen to properly appreciate it, of course.

But with the good news comes the inevitable bad, and it surrounds that much derided 16GB base model that many people will choose when picking up a new iPhone 6s or iPhone 6s Plus. Remembering that not everyone can, or wants to afford the extra outlay for 64GB of storage, it’s fair to say that plenty of people will be recording 4K video on a device with just 16GB of storage – less when you take into account the space used by the system, your apps, your music and whatever else you have on there. But lets be kind and say there’s 16GB of usable space, which there isn’t. To put it bluntly, you’re going to want to record everything in 1080p, unless it’s a very, very special occasion. Like some sort of resurrection, or England winning the World Cup.
See, as YouTuber Marques Brownlee shows in his video, the iOS Settings app helpfully tells users how much space 1 minute of video will need depending on which quality option is chosen when recording, which is great… until you look at how much storage you’ll need for just 60 seconds of 4K video: 375MB. For comparison, the same minute of 1080p video needs just 130MB, or 60MB in 720p.
If you do the math, it means a 3 minute 4K clip will roughly eat about 1 gigs of space, which means about 45 minutes of 4K video will fill up 15GB of space, which is about the maximum usable space most 16GB phones ship with.
So yeah, get that bigger capacity or start recording in the same 1080p your old iPhone was capable of.
