Following hot on the heels of Microsoft’s 1TB Xbox One Elite bundle unveiling, Sony has now brought focus back to the PlayStation 4 by announcing its next big update. The next major firmware release from the Japanese company will see the PlayStation 4’s operating system bump up to version 3.00, bringing with it a number of exciting changes, additions, and improvements that are guaranteed to get the PS4’s legion of fans worked up.
Version 3.00 of the PlayStation 4 software is codenamed Kenshin, and should be available now to those individuals who registered and have subsequently been selected for the initial 3.00 beta. So, just what exactly can early beta testers and PlayStation 4 fans start to get excited about?
The big news here is that version 3.00 will bring with it the ability to stream live gameplay directly to YouTube Live alongside Twitch. This adds a whole new worldwide social aspect to gaming on the PlayStation Network by offering compatibility with the new YouTube Gaming mobile app and websites. Sony has also taken the internal decision to serve up a lot more online storage for PlayStation 4 owners. All PlayStation Plus members will benefit from an astronomical capacity increase, rising from 1GB, to 10GB. There’s also the addition of a usage meter that immediately lets all members know exactly how much storage is being utilized.
Sony is clearly interested in expanding the social aspect of gaming within the PlayStation community. A new hub dedicated to Events has been added, as has a new Favorite Groups feature that is invoked through the Friends app and allows gamers to create and access collections of friends arranged into specific groups. The social upgrade brought in with the Kenshin update is topped off with a new Communities forum that lets users create unique communities based on anything from gaming genres to very unique, shared interests. Those individual communities will feature general discussion, message boards and the ability to share screenshots.
Is that not enough to get you excited for version 3.00? Well, how about sharing video clips directly to Twitter, the ability to message with gorgeous stickers, and even sending a “request to watch” a friends gameplay session. There’s no official word on when Kenshin will officially start landing on PlayStation 4 consoles around the world with Sony saying, “We’ll be back with more info about Kenshin soon, including the launch timing.”
