iOS 8.2 has been knocking around for well over a week now, and the question of a possible jailbreak has been raised on more than one occasion. TaiG, the Chinese jailbreaking outfit that brought you the TaiG tool for iOS 8.1.2 and iOS 8.2’s first couple of betas, could be just about to roll out a solution for the public build of iOS 8.2, and with the team set to host the Mobile Security Summit tomorrow, it would seem an apt venue for a jailbreak announcement.
In the run-up to iOS 8.2’s release, TaiG did mention that it had exploits in place that could facilitate an untethered jailbreak, but since the software made its way to the end user, the TaiG Team has kept decidedly quiet on matters.
In the release notes of iOS 8.2, Apple did appear to patch some extra exploits that may have thrown a spanner in TaiG’s works, and as such, we mightn’t be seeing a jailbreak at any point in the near future. Meanwhile, iOS hacker and security expert i0n1c has suggested that TaiG could use the MSS as a platform to launch its new jailbreak, but given the deafening silence, everything appears to be hanging by a thread just now.
Nothing is confirmed either way at this point, although we, like the rest of the jailbreak community, will be following the Mobile Security Summit very closely for any big revelations. The fact that TaiG hasn’t released a jailbreak as yet is significant, since aside from the MSS being a decent stage to make an announcement, there’s no reason for TaiG to hold on to a working jailbreak for so long.
It mustn’t be overlooked that TaiG is, after all, in competition with Pangu and several others looking to pick holes in Apple firmware, and so if any jailbreak were to be found – as we’ve seen with earlier editions of iOS 8 – a prompt release to the public would make more sense.
Still, since nobody really knows what’s going on outside of the TaiG team, we’ll be waiting in hope and keeping our fingers crossed that an iOS 8.2 jailbreak is nigh.
