The progress of TinyUmbrella, the tool that will eventually allow for local iOS restores as it did back in its heyday, has been very promising over the past month or so. In the latest update, its developer has added the ability to fetch SHSH from A7 and A8 devices, meaning that if you’re running, say, iOS 8.1.2, it will fetch the SHSH blobs despite the fact that Apple is no longer signing this particular software.
TinyUmbrella was once the essential standby tool to anybody delving into the world of jailbreaking. Offering the ability to save the essential SHSH files for each and any firmware version, TU had all the information it needed to create a fake Apple server, which could thus be used to downgrade to any firmware that SHSH blobs were saved for.
TinyUmbrella, in its old form, was a life-saver, particularly for those who’d accidentally updated to a software version that couldn’t be jailbroken, and after a couple of years in the wilderness, its reemergence onto the scene has been met with open arms.
Today’s update is a significant advancement in the grand scheme of things, since it supports the saving of SHSH blobs for A7 and A8 devices. These include the original iPad Air and iPad Air 2; iPad mini 2 and iPad mini 3; iPhone 5s, iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.
If your device does not include an A7 or A8 processor and is not mentioned above, then you’ll have to wait for iH8sn0w to update iFaith for support, and you will not, at this point, be able to use TinyUmbrella to fetch SHSH blobs.
Provided you do fit the bill, you will need to be jailbroken before you can proceed, and also, will have to have AFC2 installed on your device. If you aren’t yet running AFC2, you can do so by firing up Cydia and running a search for “Apple File Conduit 2”.
There is, it would seem, still work to be done before TU is firing on all cylinders, but the development and frequency of the updates in recent weeks has been more than tad impressive.
Being able to locally restore to older firmware is incredibly useful, and in the long run, will work to the great benefit of the jailbreak scene as a whole.
So if you have a A7 or A8 device which is on iOS 8.1.2 and jailbroken, you should totally run TU now and save SHSH blobs. As mentioned earlier, this will work now even though Apple has stopped signing the firmware, and soon will let you download to 8.1.2 in future. A must for jailbreakers!
