Majority of us have been in a situation at one time or another where we’ve been locked out of our homes -or place of work – because we’ve lost or misplaced our keys. It’s not going to be the worst thing that you ever have to contend with in your time on earth, but it can certainly prove to be extremely inconvenient and problematic if it happens. Can you imagine if you never had to worry about that again? What if you could simply carry a photo of your keys around on your smartphone and then use an app to print a 3D copy of it in the event if it’s lost? It’s a crazy world that we live in but that’s exactly what the KeyMe app for iPhone offers.
KeyMe bills itself as being a "safe, smart and convenient way to copy and share keys and solve lockouts", which immediately makes it a unique offering on the App Store. With literally more than a million apps out there, not a lot of them can say that these days.
The premise of KeyMe is actually fairly simple; take a photo of your keys using the iPhone’s camera, which then gets stored securely in the device’s keychain, share the snap with your family or friends and then order a 3D copy of the key using the KeyMe app itself, or even print yourself at one of the company’s own kiosks.
In addition to being able to immediately print your own keys (if you live near one of the "conveniently" placed kiosks), or request KeyMe to print and mail on your behalf, key scanners can also choose from thousand of different key styles to add a little bit of personalization to the received product.
It seems like an unbelievably innovative way to merge technology, new-thinking and convenience together, and there’s no doubt it will appeal to users all over the world, but would you trust a third-party app with the key data that could literally unlock your world? Check out the app for yourself and see what you think.
