Asus Zenfone 2 Announced, World’s First Smartphone With 4GB RAM

2015’s Consumer Electronic Show is in full swing right now, and some of the world’s largest technology companies are already falling over themselves to get their biggest announcements out of the way before everyone loses interest. Judging by our own interest levels of years gone past, we’d give that another ten minutes or so.

Thankfully the folks at Asus managed to bag itself a show early on, because we’ve just learned all about the much rumored Zenfone 2, which has the dubious honor of being the first smartphone to ship with a massive 4GB of RAM. If specs are you game, then the Zenfone 2 has you covered.

Beyond that huge amount of RAM, Asus has given the Zenfone 2 a 64-bit super quad-core Intel Atom CPU running at 2.3GHz. All this power will be shifting pixels around on a 5.5-inch full HD display which, according to Asus itself, has a screen-to-body ration of 72%. Unsurprisingly the firm was keen to point out that Apple’s iPhone 6 Plus runs at just over 68%, so it’s obviously better. Because that 4% is going to make or break the Zenfone 2, presumably.

Snark aside, the handset itself looks rather interesting, partly thanks to its fancy cameras with ‘pixel merging technology’ and ‘400% better light sensitivity.’ Expect better low-light performance from both the front and rear-facing shooters as a result, so says Asus.

Alongside the Zenfone 2, Asus has also outed the Zenfone Zoom, a handset that is actually a hybrid device that packs a 3x optical zoom – the world’s thinnest smartphone with such a thing, Asus says.

You will be able to buy an Asus Zenfone 2 this March and will set you back $199 on a contract.

We think we’re more interested in the Zenfone 2 than the Zoom, but both have their merits. Importantly the Zenfone 2 will ship with Android 5.0 Lollipop installed, which was one of our concerns before today.

Good to see, Asus. Good to see indeed.
