People do strange things at this time of year, and that includes just about anything that they can shoehorn some sort of Christmas, Santa Claus or elf reference into. If you’ve not had enough of the festive season just yet though and have a particular urge to start fiddling with your Wi-Fi network’s name, then we have something you just might like.
It appears that there is quite the underground movement where people choose strange, wonderful and wonderfully strange names for their Wi-Fi networks, and seeing as it’s Christmas there’s nothing better than coming up with something all holiday-themed. Well, apart from perhaps having Santa himself be the network name. Not the word either – oh no – we mean an actual picture of Santa, complete with a hat!
The way to get Santa as your Wi-Fi network name is actually a case of inserting emoji into the right option box depending on how easy or complicated you want things to be. Using a Mac at least, the easiest way to have Santa’s face staring back at your when you search for networks is to create a shared Internet connection via the Sharing preference pane in System Preferences. Now you’re going to select Wi-Fi Options, and in the Network Name box, using the Mac’s built-in emoji options, simply choose the relevant Santa one and you’re done. For those that don’t remember, pressing COMMAND+CONTROL+SPACE will bring up the emoji goodness.
If you’re more of a tinkerer though you could just change the name of your Wi-Fi access point’s network, but that will mean that anything looking for the old network will fail to connect and can be a real pain if you have to start entering passwords all over again.
That said, it’s Christmas. Live a little!
