With all the excitement surrounding the release of new hardware alongside the public release of OS X 10.10 Yosemite, it’s easy to miss some of the smaller, almost stealthy going-ons at Apple. One of those is the release of iTunes 12.0.1 that has just gone live for Mac OS X and Windows users.
The new version of Apple’s media management application is available for both the new Yoesemite and the old, outgoing Mavericks versions of the Mac operating system, and is the first publicly released iteration of iTunes to bear the ‘12’ version number. Those using the public beta of Yosemite will already have had access to it, but this is the first version to land on the Mac App Store. If you’re on Windows and are running iTunes 11.x, then you can download the update too.
This newly updated version of iTunes brings with it some new design language that is meant to better reflect what Apple has been trying to do with Yosemite. Somewhat iOS 7 and iOS 8-like, the new color scheme as well as the heavy use of translucency in order to give the feeling of depth is something that is a recurring theme, and Apple has more closely incorporated the iTunes Store with the users’ library in order to further blur the lines between what we own and what is available from Apple’s store.
Both the Yosemite and Mavericks versions of iTunes 12.0.1 can be downloaded from within the Mac App Store alongside what is the first security update for OS X Mavericks post-Yosemite. If you’re not making the jump to the big new version of OS X just yet, then do yourself a favor and at least download the new security update.
Windows users can download the update from the Software Update tool, or by simply pointing their browser to: apple.com/itunes
Apple announced that Yosemite would be available for free today during its big iPad and iMac with Retina display announcement today. True to its word, Yosemite is available to download via the Mac App Store right now alongside the newly updated iTunes.
