With plenty of technologically developed countries still afar from a decent 3G network coverage, and 4G LTE in no real sight, Samsung is busy planning for the future. It was almost a year ago when Samsung was reportedly working on testing the 5G mobile network technology with 1Gbps download speed, but since then, has achieved a seven-fold increase in speed. I will save the word "whopping" for the latest 7.5Gbps download speed that Samsung has just achieved in its test environment. This puts 5G at over 30 times faster than 4G LTE!
According to Samsung, they achieved a jaw dropping 940MBps ins a stationary environment, and around 150MBps while travelling at around 100km/h on a 4.35km race track, to test it out as consumers on a moving vehicle. According to Samsung, the uninterrupted 150MBps speed in a moving environment at 100kp/h was an industry first. More so, the stationary environment test was an industry first as well, being tested in an outdoor setting, unlike previous tests conducted in controlled indoor settings.
Samsung tested these speeds using a 28Ghz 5G network, and overcome the short communication range obstacle through its own Hybrid Adaptive Array Technology, but I wont bore you with the details on that. In short, it allows Samsung to use higher frequencies at greater than before distances.
The head of DMC R&D Center at Samsung Electronics, said, that "In addition to leveraging our own global R&D capabilities, we will also continue to cooperate with other industry leaders and research centers across the world." Samsung says it continues to engage industry members and standard-setting organizations to help in steering the direction of the 5G network development. Samsung – dubbing the 5G network as the "5G Rainbow" – identified seven core pillars of the 5G tech:
- Maximum date rate
- Spectral efficiency
- Mobility speed
- Data transmission rate at the cell boundary
- Number of simultaneous connections
- Communication delays
- Cost
Samsung is still testing this technology so don’t get your hopes up all at once. The company will continue making changes to the technology as well as the tests progress. With 4G’s theoretical speed at around 75Mbps, which is amazingly speedy on its own, the speed we’re looking at on 5G networks will not be hitting users anytime before 2020 at least. When it does, it will not be reaching globally of course – and as is the case with 4G Networks globally, 5G will be the pipe-dream of tomorrow.
