At the big iPhone 6 event a couple of weeks ago, Apple also, as expected, took the wraps off its very first smartwatch. Named Apple Watch, the company released a series of videos outlining the various styles, fitness-related features and other perks that will come with owning its first major wearable, but given that was, and is, still nowhere near its “early 2015” release, some information was naturally kept under wraps. One such detail was that of the storage, and today, a new report apparently sheds some light on the capacity of the Apple Watch.
According to Cowen and Company analyst Timothy Arcuri, who has been in contact with supply chain sources of Apple’s, the Watch will arrive in 4GB and 8GB storage capacities. 4GB is in line with what is offered as standard by most other smartwatch vendors, and the 8GB will also apparently be offered to those looking for slightly more real estate.
The 4GB will likely be the biggest seller, just like the lower-capacity iPhones and iPads dominate sales, and the different storage thresholds will no doubt have a direct effect on price.
Arcuri also notes that the device will be fitted with a GPS radio, suggesting that it will not require an accompanying iPhone for this location-based information. Apple inferred at the launch that its Watch would require an iPhone in order to avail GPS data, but if Arcuri’s information is correct, this will not be the case.
Given that Apple has only given a rough estimate for the release of the Watch, it could indeed be eight months before the product actually goes on sale, and although the company suggested that the wrist-worn gadget would have the stamina to run for a full day, the Cupertino company is apparently unhappy with the performance in this regard. It has been said that Apple is working to improve battery retention, which indicates that key details have not been finalized as yet, and until we get word that Apple Watch is in production, it’s somewhat difficult to get too excited about it.
Still, Apple only really showcased Apple Watch so early on to prevent Android Wear getting too much of a leg up in the battle of the ecosystems, although with the beauty of devices like the Moto 360 leading the way on Google’s platform, it’s likely that some would-be Apple Watch owners might instead check out some of the alternatives.
