In the run-up to the announcement of the iPhone 6, particularly during the latter stages, it was suspected that Apple would also launch the new iPad Air. These notions seemed a little afoot, particularly given that we’re accustomed to October iPad announcements, and when said iPad showcasing did not occur, we immediately knew that Apple was likely to be sticking with tradition. Now, a new report has surfaced suggesting that the refresh to both iPad models will be unveiled on October 21st, with OS X Yosemite 10.10 also rolling out for Mac on the very same day.
According to the folks over at The Daily Dot, Apple’s second biggest event of the year will kick off on October 21st, and given that the Cupertino company tends to follow up an iPhone launch by next focusing its attentions on its prized tablet, it’s certainly plausible. Moreover, OS X Yosemite 10.10, which was announced alongside iOS 8 back at the Worldwide Developers’ Conference back in June, may also be made available to the public on the very same day, and given how the latest public betas and Developer Previews seem to be close to completion, the Daily Dot report makes a great deal of sense.
The iPad Air 2, or iPad 6, will likely be given a similar fleet of upgrades to the third-gen iPad mini. Technically, the iPad Air and iPad mini with Retina display are almost identical, with only a slight difference in processor clock speed separating the also differently-sized slates.
As well as Apple’s new A8 processor and M8 motion coprocessor, the Touch ID fingerprint sensor is also expected to début on the larger devices after a successful roll-out with the iPhone 5s, and as ever, it’s also likely that both tablets will be thinner than the current line-up.
As far as Yosemite is concerned, there’s not really much to tell. We already know of most of the features, and with the numerous previews and betas, have had a chance to monitor its progress.
But as we look forward to the new Mac software, we’re also secretly hoping for some improvements to the hardware. The elusive Retina MacBook Air seems unlikely given that Intel’s new Broadwell chips are still a work in progress, but with talk of a higher-res Thunderbolt Display and new Mac mini on the horizon, it’ll be interesting to see what unfolds in a month’s time.
