With Samsung having already rolled out a handful of smartwatches and several other companies jumping on the Android Wear bandwagon, it’s strongly suspected that Apple will also come through with its first smartwatch at some point later this year. For the most part, it has been suggested that the ‘iWatch’ would arrive after the small matter of the iPhone 6 and iPad refresh had been resolved, but now, a very reliable source has indicated that a new wearable will also be on the agenda for September 9th.
John Paczkowski of Re/code, who is credited with offering the current 9/9 date of the special iPhone announcement, has updated his initial predictions by also noting that a "new wearable" will be a topic of discussion, which, in many ways, changes the whole dynamic of the unveiling. Some time ago, Paczkowski suggested that the iWatch wouldn’t hit the scene until October, but having gathered this new information on the device’s release, has also shed a little light on what we should expect of it.
Reports have long since implied that the iWatch would be heavily integrated with the iPhone and iOS 8’s HealthKit and HomeKit, and indeed, focus intently on the wearer’s health and general wellbeing. Paczkowski believes that this remains very much the case, and given that we’re expecting two sensor-packed models tailored to male and female wearers, the prospect of the September 9th keynote is suddenly doubly exciting.
According to Paczkowski, Apple was originally going to take the wraps off the iWatch in October along with the new Touch ID-enabled iPads, but having shuffled its schedule around, will now do so in a couple of weeks’ time.
However, even if Apple does make it official on September 9th, this doesn’t necessarily mean it will hit shelves any time soon. After all, the trash can-like Mac Pro was shown off at WWDC last year to much fanfare, but didn’t actually retail for many months and when it did, was in very, very short supply.
Given the lack of any physical evidence of the iWatch’s whereabouts coupled with the supposed issues with iWatch production, it’s likely that the it won’t be available for at least a month or two following next month’s alleged event, but nevertheless, we could now be on the cusp of a monumental day of product announcements in early September.
