For the first couple of months of this year and some time prior, Flappy Bird had taken a stronghold on many iOS and Android users looking for a casual game to keep them entertained. Consumed by the tricky physics involved, the title was both challenging and frustrating in equal measure, but with the game seeming to leave players reeling in anger rather than feeling any kind of accomplishment, developer Dong Nguyen took the decision to remove it from the iOS App Store, as well as Google Play. After recently hinting that Flappy Bird might make a dramatic return, though, he has now confirmed that it will be re-entering the fold at some point in the future, although “not soon,” according to his Twitter feed.
As a lone developer from Vietnam, he became something of a celebrity in his home nation following the success of Flappy Bird, but clearly, it wasn’t something he particularly relished. Somewhat unsettled by the overnight fame and fortune, he seems now to be enjoying a period of respite, and with the dust having settled on the game’s removal, is now contemplating its return.
Such was the stronghold that Flappy Bird had on the casual gaming world, that following its removal from the Android and iOS stores, folks were even trying to sell their devices online at a premium with the title installed.
As well as making some money for those who’ve developed the numerous Flappy Bird clones floating around, Nguyen himself was reportedly generating a whopping $50,000 per day in ad revenue alone, and even though he has demonstrated himself as a man of integrity and an advocate for indie gaming development rather than a person purely in it for financial gain, it’s the kind of success story that many developers can only dream about.
Still, now we know it’s coming back, the only question that remains, is when. With suggestions also swirling that the title might re-emerge under a different name, we’ll have to wait and see what the title’s enigmatic developer is planning, but hopefully, he’ll see fit to return Flappy Bird back to its ragingly-enjoyable former glory.
Are you looking forward to Flappy Bird’s return?
