Apple’s iPhone 6 is highly expected to be an embodiment of the company’s future direction, both in form and function. A number of early rumors have already alluded to the fact that the Cupertino company is intending to step away from the 4-inch form factor that has served the iPhone 5, 5s and 5c so well in favor of something a little larger. In addition to that change of physical size, one well-placed analyst is predicting that the iPhone 6 will introduce a number of new internal sensors that could open up the device to a whole host of new possibilities.
Sun Chang Xu, who makes her living as a chief electronics analyst for ESM-China, is speculating via her personal social media accounts that Apple’s next-generation iPhone will include three new sensors. To compliment the current range of hardware based sensors Chang Xu is reporting that the iPhone 6 will feature a temperature, humidity and pressure sensor to further enhance the capabilities of Apple’s hardware. The integration of a ‘pressure‘ sensor is likely to get tongues wagging due to the recent reports of a new native Healthbook app that will ship with iOS 8, however, in this instance Chang Xu is likely referring to atmospheric pressure rather than blood.
If Apple does go down the route of introducing a range of new sensors in the iPhone 6, it will hardly be considered as industry leading. Bitter rival Samsung is ahead of the game in that respect, with the readily available Galaxy S4 handset already shipping with a range of atmospheric sensors included. History has already shown us on more than one occasion, Apple very rarely make knee-jerk reactions to try and keep up with the competition. Apple’s potential integration of additional sensors into a future iPhone would seem to fit in nicely with its long-term plans of introducing an in-depth health and fitness platform into iOS and all associated hardware.
The future certainly looks interesting for the iPhone and iOS, albeit shrouded in mystery. A number of recent leaks have shown that iOS 8 will most likely be introduced at this year’s Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) in June and will likely feature a health based native app by the name of Healthbook. With strong speculation suggesting that the much talked about iWatch is still firmly on the agenda, it’s extremely exciting to see where Apple will take iOS going forward.
