2014 is shaping up quite nicely as The Year of the Smartwatch, and with Samsung already having announced the Gear 2 and Gear Fit at last month’s Mobile World Congress, we’re expecting at least two of the mobile industry’s other big names to follow suit in the coming months. As well as the Apple ‘iWatch,’ which has been referenced in numerous leaks and concepts running back a few years now, Google also rumored to be developing a smartwatch of its own. Today, for the first time, we’ve an insight into its purported specifications.
Wearable tech has been thrust into the spotlight of late, with Google being among the big names involved in this concerted push. In revealing and subsequently beta-releasing its Glass face computer last year, it has long since been deemed a formality that a Google smartwatch would also be in the offing from the Android maker, and thanks to a tweet by notorious leaker Evleaks, we now have a genuine idea of its tech. specs.
Even though certain products, such as the Nexus range, release under Google’s own branding, the search giant usually assigns a partner to take care of the manufacturing process. LG, the Korean company behind the Nexus 5 smartphone released late last year, is also said to be behind its successor, and, as we heard earlier on this month, has been tasked with creating the Big G’s inaugural smartwatch.
That previous report indicated that the Nexus 6 and new smartwatch would release contemporaneously, in much the same fashion as Samsung dropped the Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy Gear alongside each other back in September, and while Evleaks’ tweet does not speculate on a release date or even give mention of the Nexus 6, it does note of LG’s involvement once more.
As for the specs themselves, the smartwatch will supposedly pack in a 1.65-inch IPS display with a 280×280 resolution, as well as 512 megs of RAM and 4GB of storage space.
One of the main issues that some color-display smartwatches have encountered hitherto — particularly in the case of the Galaxy Gear – is excess battery drainage, and so if Evleaks is once again accurate with its claims, it will certainly be interesting to see if the tentatively-named ‘Nexus’ smartwatch will be able to handle a full day’s use.
