Last month, Samsung dropped its Galaxy Gear smartwatch, and although Pebble’s Kickstarter-boosted effort is credited as the main reason for the uptake in big-company interest on wrist-worn tech, it’s fair to say that the South Korean company doesn’t have a great deal of competition at this moment in time. According to a report over at The Wall Street Journal, though, this could soon be about to change, with Google apparently just a couple of months away from finalizing a smartwatch of its own.
As you would imagine, the report suggests that the Google smartwatch will be heavily invested in Google Now, and since this is also an integral part of Glass, the other piece of wearable tech under construction by the search giant, it’s more than likely that both the company’s headgear and wrist gear will be more than supplementary to one another.
We first heard back in July via the WSJ that the Mountain View-based company was working on a smartwatch, and moreover, that Google was well into the process. Now, the respected publication has gone further, suggesting that the device could be ready for mass production in the next couple of months.
As ever, the report cites sources familiar with the matter, but The Wall Street Journal seldom casts aspersions without doing a decent amount of research beforehand. Many of its projections pertaining tech products of recent times have proven accurate, and with Google, like Samsung, ever keen to explore all avenues in the mobile tech industry, it’s fairly safe to say that a Google smartwatch will probably come to light in the very near future.

Whether it will be a truly smart device, rather than one heavily reliant on a smartphone, remains to be seen, but all we can do for the time being is speculate. Google’s Now service would seem an inevitability in almost any mobile product the company makes moving forward, and with display real-estate on wearable tech often at a premium, the power of the voice-based software will be essential.
