While we might have been entirely engrossed in the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c launch, and while the keynote yesterday would’ve made it sound like these are the only two Apple devices in existence that are worth any mention, that doesn’t mean that the company itself has forgotten its other lineups altogether. Earlier, we reported that new Apple TV iOS 7 update will be available Sept. 18, just alongside iOS 7, and now, thanks to a tweet from MG Siegler, it appears that the set top box itself will be seeing a new iteration next month.
Siegler, who’s been known for being “well-connected”, simply states:
“I guess those excited about a software refresh in a week are gonna be *really* excited when new Apple TV hardware is unveiled next month.”
If the TechCrunch columnist is to be believed (and we don’t see a reason not to), Apple TV will be getting a healthy upgrade in a iPad-related media event next month. This will basically address a long overdue upgrade, seeing as how the latest Apple TV has been around for almost 18 months without an upgrade emerging on the horizon. If you exclude the Apple TV 3 refresh, which brought forward 1080p support and performance enhancements, of course.
Interestingly enough, Apple has always touted this particular device as more of a hobby rather than being something essential to your living room, much unlike what Microsoft has done for the Xbox One. Despite the stark difference in marketing strategies, Apple TV holds its ground as a solid set top box, one with the capacity to hold onto consumers that try it out for even the first time.
There had been previous reports that Apple would unveil the new iteration of Apple TV at the keynote yesterday, but now that we’re past the event, that obviously didn’t happen. Still, since Siegler is so confident that this is going to happen, we’re more than eager to wait and see.
Rumor mill also claims that Apple had been testing motion controls for televisions for a while, something along the same lines as the Xbox Kinect from Microsoft. However, it was never clear whether this would be something embedded within the Apple TV, or a completely new device.
