There has been much talk in the press of Apple’s supposed preparation of a budget iPhone device, and today, it would appear as though Techdy has got his hands on the front and rear parts of the elusive low-cost handset. When placed together, they offer a very solid idea of the form the low-cost iPhone could take, and on first impression, we cannot help but feel that it looks incredibly similar to the Nokia Lumia 620.
As well as numerous images and a video, Techdy has also described how the device feels when held. Although it’s not technically a complete, working device (it cannot be switched on), the two parts give the appearance of a complete device when placed together, and although it’s comprised predominantly of polycarbonate, Techdy is quick to point out that it doesn’t feel in any way cheap.
Kind of like the Lumia 920, which also consists of a shiny plastic finish (although, it’s polycarbonate), it still apparently offers a somewhat premium feel, and although we’d presume it doesn’t quite measure up to the iPhone 5 when it comes to standard of finish, it does go to show that even if Apple is going to break the mold in appealing to the mid-market, it certainly isn’t going to make too many compromises on its ethos to deliver high-quality devices.
As well as having a 4-inch display akin to the iPhone 5, the form factor is described as “a shape that’s similar to Apple’s original iPod.” From here, it looks the spitting image of the Lumia 620, and with Apple having been quick to criticize others for copying its designs, it would seem an ironic twist of events.
The Samsung Galaxy range has come under fire for cheap, plastic finishes, but as Techdy reports, the budget iPhone will be anything but. Talking of the device’s body, the report notes that “the plastic material used on the budget iPhone feels more sturdy [than the Samsung Galaxy range].”
Certainly, it’s not going to outshine the flagship iPhone, but this wouldn’t be a very favorable move on Apple’s part anyway. With that said, we’re impressed with what we’ve seen here, and if this is a legitimate leak, I’m inclined to suggest the low-cost iPhone – should it be low-cost enough for those key markets – has the potential to be an unprecedented success. Also, according to previous reports, we’ve learned that the budget iPhone will come in several different color configurations, but that’s not all; it’s also being reported that Apple might jump the gun and launch an iPhone phablet too next year.
