Microsoft’s Xbox One is a fairly good looking device. Yes, granted, it is a little bit set-top boxy for some people’s liking, but all told, it will make a nice aesthetic impression on most living rooms. Some unofficial renders of the machine have just popped up on Sketchfab, and if you fancy taking a closer look at the forthcoming Microsoft console, now you can. Bear in mind, these are not endorsed officially by Microsoft, but since Xbox LIVE’s Larry Hryb a.k.a. Major Nelson tweeted about the designs, they’ve at least been dealt an air of legitimacy.
It’s definitely a well-crafted piece, allowing us to heavily scrutinize the new console, Kinect and the controller. Of course, we’ve already been given full-blown access thanks to the launch, which is more than can be said for the elusive PlayStation 4, but the Sketchfab render really puts the thing under the microscope.
In looking from these angles, I have to say, the Xbox One reminds me very much of the original console. It has many square edges, making for a rather significant diversion from the curved smoothness of the current 360.
Does it look too much like a set-top box? Perhaps. Many have argued since the launch that Microsoft has forgotten about the Xbox’s gaming roots, instead going all-out on the TV market. That’s certainly the impression I got, and in terms of visuals, the Xbox One is built to appeal to the wider market beyond sheer gaming.
The controller looks largely unchanged from the last generation, but once again, bears remnants of the first Xbox’s pad. Some have labeled it as being ugly, and while I would personally reserve judgment until actually using one, I don’t believe it looks quite as nice as the DualShock 4 controller Sony unveiled in February.
Still, looks aren’t everything, and having myself found the both Xbox controllers hitherto to be more comfortable to use than any of the PlayStations, the proof of the pudding will be in the playing.
Finally, the render also shows the new Kinect sensor, and from what Microsoft has already demonstrated, the interactive experience will be greatly enhanced next time around. Naturally, each Xbox One will ship with the new Kinect right out of the box, and with the current gen having been one of the most popular gadgets ever sold, it will be a driving force behind the Xbox brand’s continued success.
