We first learned last week that Square Enix’s Final Fantasy V would be hitting Japan before making its way to the App Store, as well as Google’s Play Store. Whilst the Android version still has yet to materialize, the title can now be downloaded for owners of the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.
Final Fantasy has been a long-running, flagship enterprise for Square Enix, and although the developer-publisher is reported to be struggling just now with profits on the downturn, the company has a slew of Final Fantasy titles ready to release to consumers. As well as this version of Final Fantasy V for iOS (and later, Android), HD remasters of Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy X-2 are also in the pipeline, with debut trailers having already surfaced earlier this week.
Final Fantasy began in the days of the PlayStation with Final Fantasy VII, and with numerous volumes having been added to the collection ever since, there’s a pretty expansive library for fans of the famed RPG to enjoy.
The iOS release of Final Fantasy V will certainly keep enthusiast happy until the HD remasters of FF10 and FF10-2 arrive, and although the $15.99 cost may be off-putting to many, it does look a very well polished, immersive affair. Moreover, the aesthetics look a great deal softer than players have hitherto been accustomed, and with a bunch of new job classes including Gladiator, Cannoneer, Oracle and Necromancer, you do get a fair bit of bang for your buck.
Although we haven’t had a chance to try it out for ourselves, the early adopters seem impressed, with the game having already attained a five star rating on the App Store at the time of writing.
Optimized for the iPhone 5, Final Fantasy V is a universal title that will run just fine on any iOS device provided it is running iOS 4.3 or above.
