Although now two years old, the iPhone 4 still continues to sell in great numbers, and having recently dropped down to the low price of $99, the device has now been made permanently cheaper at Best Buy – shipping for $49 on contract.
Of course, although the price is certainly a good deal, you’ll have to consider that you’ll be using a four-year-old in July 2014, which is like using an iPhone 3G now. That said, many are coping just fine with the older iPhones – such is the build quality – and if you’re looking for a decent deal on a subsidized smartphone, this is arguably the best one going around.
Although the iPhone 4 first launched in 2010, the 8GB version on offer for the low price is, strictly speaking, no older than the iPhone 4S. Before the fifth-gen device arrived back in October of last year, the iPhone 4 used to sell in 16GB and 32GB varieties, but in order to cut costs, Apple decided to continue retailing the phone as an 8GB model. To be honest, the majority of your friends will not be able to tell the difference between an iPhone 4 and a 4S, which gives added appeal to an already wonderful deal.
The only catch is the 2-year contractual agreement, and you can pick from Verizon, AT&T, and the Now Network. We can only speculate the price drop is a permanent affair, given there’s no hint of a "special" or "limited" offer over on Best Buy’s website. In addition, with the next-generation iPhone said to be arriving in September, it would make sense for Apple – and its retailers – to shift as many units of the older device as possible.
Apple shifted 27 million iPhones in Q2 according to Tuesday’s earnings call, and although the numbers are impressive, they are estimated to only be half the numbers Samsung shifted. Of course, the Korean company had the added advantage of the Samsung Galaxy S III, but with the quad-core device only said to have sold around 10-12 million units hitherto, there’s still a major discrepancy Apple will seek to alter.
In the meantime, if you would like a new iPhone and aren’t too concerned which generation you’re getting, the iPhone 4 can be had over at Best Buy for just $49.
