Rumors of Apple working to bring cellular connectivity to MacBooks have been swirling for years but so far nothing has been announced. However, according to a new report by DigiTimes that could change in the second half of 2020.
While 2020 is still a long way off, let alone the second half of it, DigiTimes reports that Lenovo, HP, and Dell will be launching their own 5G-connected notebooks later this year and Apple will be joining them next year.
The world’s top-3 notebook vendors Lenovo, HP and Dell are set to introduce their first 5G models in the second half of 2019, and Apple is also expected to roll out its 5G MacBook series in the second half of 2020, according to industry sources.
At this point it is prudent to note that DigiTimes is notoriously unreliable when it comes to making predictions of this ilk, despite having plenty of shots at it. It cites supply chain connections this time around, although whether it is any more accurate remains to be seen.
With Apple having recently signed a deal to pick up part of Intel’s cellular modem business it makes sense that it would want to use those modems in as many places as possible. It also enables deeper integrations than might have previously been possible, too. Apple is also believed to be having some luck improving 5G performance in notebooks by using a ceramic antenna board, a material it has used in other products in the past.
Apple previously toyed with the idea of producing a 3G MacBook Air but then-CEO Steve Jobs canned the plan because of the amount of space in the chassis that would be taken up, along with the fact it would lock users to a particular carrier. That’s something that could presumably be fixed with an e-SIM, at the very least.
