As you may already know, Apple recently released the seventh beta of tvOS 11, the upcoming major release of the software that will power Apple TV hardware once it is made available to the public, likely next month.
The release is the latest in a long line of betas during which Apple has worked to iron out the kinks ahead of final release, and it would appear that it is also getting all of its ducks in a row ahead of a new hardware release too.
Following the arrival of this beta, it has been discovered that there are assets built into the software that reference “J105a,” previously reported as the code name for an upcoming 4K-capable Apple TV. That code name was first shared by Bloomberg during a report that claimed a 4K-capable Apple TV could arrive at some point this year. The reference was discovered by developer Guilherme Rambo, and if that name rings a bell, it is with good reason.
Rambo has made something of a name for himself of late after digging into the recently released HomePod firmware and finding all manner of iPhone 8 references. This time, he discovered image files with reference to the 4K Apple TV’s code name as well as “HDR.”
Apple recently began listing movies with both 4K and HDR versions within its iTunes store, suggesting that the company is getting ready to begin offering 4K content. If that is the case, then it stands to reason that there would need to be some form of 4K-ready hardware on which to play the content, and with the current Apple TV maxing out at 1080p, a new Apple TV will be needed.
All the dots add up just so, and if our thinking is right, we should be seeing a new 4K-ready Apple TV in the next few months.
