If you thought that the Nexus 7 was old news, then we probably wouldn’t blame you. Google’s tablet has been around for a few months now, and has been met with reaction ranging from those that love it, to those that downright hate it. Today, Google gave the Nexus 7 something of a refresh, adding new options to the lineup in the process.
Previously, Nexus 7 buyers had just the two options – there was an 8GB base model, and the more roomy 16GB offering for those that needed just a little more space in which to breathe. As of today, those options have expanded to include a new storage option (admittedly, one’s also gone completely) as well as an additional radio.
If you’re thinking about picking up a Nexus 7, you’re now left with three options. Gone is the 8GB offering, with 16GB of storage now being the base model at $199. The other capacity option on offer is a new 32GB version, and the extra space will set buyers back $249. Competitive prices, we’re sure you’ll agree.
That’s not all folks. Google today also announced that the 32GB flavor can also be bought with a 3G radio inside. The aptly named Nexus 7 (32GB + Mobile) will set punters back $299. If you’ve been itching for a Nexus 7 with 3G connectivity built right in, then today’s your lucky day. If not, then could we interest you in a Nexus 10? Perhaps a Nexus 4? Or maybe Android 4.2 Jelly Bean? Oh go on, you know you want to!
Beyond that, nothing’s changed, and 13th of November is the expected shipping date for anyone thinking about splashing the cash on Google’s updated tablet. With Apple’s iPad mini due in stores this week, Google just reminded everyone that there’s already a capable tablet in the 7-inch arena. We just hope they’ve ironed out their manufacturing woes since we tested the original Nexus 7!
Alongside the new Nexus 10, Google now offers a range of Android-powered tablets that should give OEMs a run for their money. Samsung in particular, take note. Google’s laying out just what it expects from manufacturers right here. Whether they’re paying attention however, remains to be seen.
