The current Mac Pro is produced in Austin, Texas and Apple was keen to point that out when ever possible. The computer even boasts an “Assembled in the USA” label, but that doesn’t look possible with the 2019 Mac Pro. Apple made no mention of where the new Mac Pro would be made when it was announced during WWDC, with many assuming that meant it would be built offshore. According to The Wall Street Journal, that is indeed what’s happening.
The new Mac Pro will be made by Quanta, according to the report. That’s the same company that makes some of the MacBook notebooks and because it’s cheaper to make computers in China, that’s where it’s going to happen. Many of the components that will go into the new computer are also produced in China, which means they won’t need to be shipped to the United States, too.
Apple is keen to point out that while the Mac Pro is ultimately being assembled in China, that doesn’t mean that is the only country involved in making this thing a reality.
Apple said it supports manufacturing in 30 U.S. states and spent $60 billion last year with more than 9,000 U.S. suppliers.
“Final assembly is only one part of the manufacturing process,” the spokesman said, adding that the company’s investments support two million American jobs.
Despite everyone lauding the fact that the 2013 Mac Pro is made in the United States, nobody bought one. It was also the victim of a vicious design flaw, which meant that it couldn’t be cooled well enough to pack the best processors available, making it slower than some of Apple’s more recent computers. For a machine aimed at the most demanding of users, and with a price to match, that was simply not good enough.
