Apple’s WWDC 2019 keynote has come to a close and it’s been a doozy. And just as was predicted, Apple has taken the wraps off both the new Mac Pro and Apple Pro Display XDR – its new pro-oriented display.
Both of these new arrivals will go on sale later this year, and both come with eye-watering prices. That was to be expected given the target audience, but the sticker shock is still real. Especially with that new display.
Starting with the Mac Pro, though, those who are still having nightmares about the previous model will finally be able to exorcise those demons thanks to the new 2019 Mac Pro. It’s gorgeous, and closely resembles the infamous ‘cheese grater” Mac Pro that was so loved by Apple fans and professionals alike.
As Apple notes via press release, the new Mac Pro was designed to be fully modular while still offering the globs of power that a pro Mac should. There’s a lot going on inside this new chassis.
“We designed Mac Pro for users who require a modular system with extreme performance, expansion and configurability. With its powerful Xeon processors, massive memory capacity, groundbreaking GPU architecture, PCIe expansion, Afterburner accelerator card and jaw-dropping design, the new Mac Pro is a monster that will enable pros to do their life’s best work,” said Phil Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing.
Apple says that new Mac Pro will be configurable up to 28 cores via a new Intel Xeon processor. There’s also support for up to 1.5TB of memory via 12 DIMM slots. Graphics is handled admirably thanks to a new Apple MPX model, a new expansion system that features Thunderbolt integration, a first for graphics architecture.
The Mac Pro will ship with a Radeon Pro Vega II chip as standard with 32GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD. You’ll have to hand over $5999 to get your hands on one when it arrives this fall.
The Pro Display XDR is a 32-inch LCD panel with a 6K resolution of 6016 x 3384. It supports all of the buzzwords you’d expect, with a P3 wide color gamut and support for more than 1 billion colors. Each monitor is also calibrated at the factory.
The numbers are pretty impressive, too. With a 1,000-nit brightness and a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio, this is a panel that will offer Extreme Dynamic Range, or XDR. That’s Apple’s name for a monitor that goes beyond HDR, and it’s said to be the perfect companion for professionals that need huge amounts of workspace as well as a display that can offer an accurate representation of their work.
Again, none of this comes cheap. Anyone looking to pick one of these admittedly pretty amazing monitors up will have to spend $4999 to get one, and then another $999 to get the magic Pro Stand that allows it to be swiveled, pivoted, and generally positioned just about any which way. There’s also a premium for a special matte version, too. Just like the Mac Pro, this monitor goes on sale this fall.
