By now, you should already be aware that Apple has finally updated its aging iPod touch hardware with the introduction of a seventh-generation portable touchscreen player.
The external aesthetic of the device may be the same as the previous generation but what exactly has happened improved and why should you care? Let’s take a look at that new device.
First of all, Apple has revamped one key component of the iPod touch: the internal processor. It’s staggering to believe but the sixth-generation iPod touch was actually introduced to the public four years ago in 2015.
With this release, Apple has bumped the internals up to include its stunning A10 Fusion chip, which is not quite the pinnacle of its chip technology that can be found in the latest iPhone models but it’s good enough for a 2-times speed improvement over the older hardware. Comparisons should also show 3-times faster graphics than the 2015 model.
The Cupertino-based business has also looked to ensure that the iPod touch takes that next step in terms of being a powerful device ready for the modern world. With that in mind, Apple has exposed two key features which will make a world of difference for iPod touch owners who invest in this hardware.
First and foremost, the wonderful and relatively new Group FaceTime functionality is in play here allowing up to 32 people to join in a single FaceTime call over audio or video. Apple has also the world of augmented reality to iPod touch by embedding ARKit capabilities on the device. To the end user, that simply means that all of those wonderful apps and games which are created using Apple’s ARKit framework will be accessible and usable on the seventh-generation iPod touch.
Of course, with added functionality like ARKit, and the expectation that owners will download more games and apps also comes the realization that additional storage capacity is needed. To that end, Apple has also used the seventh-generation release to introduce a brand new 256GB storage option for iPod touch.
Apple’s sixth-generation iPod touch can easily be classified as one device which has served the company immensely well. Now, it’s time for it to stand aside, retire its circuitry, and make way for the new seventh-generation hardware to take the iPod into the modern world!
