On June 29, 2007, Apple finally released the original iPhone, six months after Steve Jobs announced it and many more months after the rumors of an Apple-made smartphone first began to circulate.
The device was introduced as being akin to the iPod in 2001 and the Macintosh in 1984 in that it would revolutionize the mobile phone industry. Few believed that could actually happen, but now ten years later it is clear to everyone that it actually did exactly that, and more besides.
Announced at the Macworld Expo 2007 in San Francisco, the iPhone was given its debut on-stage by Steve Jobs, and he was at his very best when he did it. Announcing three revolutionary products: “a widescreen iPod with touch controls”, a “revolutionary mobile phone”, and a “breakthrough Internet communications device”, Jobs dropped the bombshell; he wasn’t talking about three devices, he was talking about just the one. That device was the iPhone, and it paved the way for a change in the way we use our mobile devices forever.
Apple’s iPhone sales started at 6:00 p.m. local time on June 29, 2007 and as has become a custom, there were plenty of people in line waiting to get their hands on the new phone. Many had been there days, and stores closed at 2:00 PM to allow Apple to get everything ready for the big launch.
The first iPhone shipped with a 3.5-inch display, no physical keyboard, and was every bit the smartphone of the future. The rest, as they say is history and we now find ourselves ten years later and looking forward to what will be the best iPhone yet; the iPhone 8, or iPhone X depending on who you listen to. The phone will be announced this September, and it promises to be quite the upgrade over not just that first iPhone from 2007 but also 2016’s iPhone 7.
Few knew the iPhone would turn into the billion selling smartphone we have today. At this point though, few would argue against its status as icon in the world of technology.
