Spotify Takes Top Spot Ahead Of Apple Music As The Most Popular Music Streaming Service

Spotify is the number one most popular music streaming service around the world with Apple Music in second spot, according to new market research from Midia Research.

Those numbers have Apple Music making up around 15% of all streaming music users during the second quarter of 2021 which means that it’s sat in a very distant second spot.

Spotify’s 31% gives it a very comfortable lead in the top spot.

Notably, Spotify’s impressive number is actually lower than the same quarter in 2020.

Spotify remains the DSP with the highest market share (31%), but this was down from 33% in Q2 2020 and 34% in Q2 2019. With Apple Music being a distant second with 15% market share, and Spotify adding more subscribers in the 12 months leading up to Q2 2021 than any other single DSP, there is no risk of Spotify losing its leading position anytime soon – but the erosion of its share is steady and persistent.

Google’s YouTube Music is the only streamer to increase its market share, growing by more than 50% during the year. The report suggests that it’s YouTube Music’s ability to scoop up “Gen Z and younger Millennials” that has stood it in good steed.

As a whole, the same report believes that the overall streaming music market grew by almost 110 million people with the total number now sitting at around 524 million potential customers.
